John and Pauline Prescott’s series ‘The class system and me’ has been a revelation in authenticity and charm. John, much maligned as a communicator, has demonstrated that his detractors have a lot to learn.
Typical of most documentaries, this has been a whistle stop tour for the Prescotts taking in: the Henley set to the Hay festival to visiting estates to discuss the meaning of the word ‘Chav’ whilst all the time investigating class in society.
In between all of this, what John and Pauline showed us is an ability to communicate at all levels.
Their genuine nature came through and the honesty in their communication was revealing. It is amazing that some of the strongest people we know have such self-doubt in their own abilities.
The programme served to show how cruel our media can be in the way it portrays people and focuses on supposed weaknesses such as John’s inability to sometimes communicate without a minor grammatical gaffe. However, it was pleasing to see the irrelevance of splitting an infinitive or mispronouncing a word over and above the simple ability to talk to anybody at the same level and to make them comfortable.
